The Fear Nobody Admits They're Carrying

Most people are not actually stressed about today.

They are afraid of tomorrow.

They are afraid of a future they cannot see clearly. A future where the job changes. The kids change. The economy changes. The technology changes. The rules change. The ground they have been standing on for twenty years suddenly does not feel solid anymore.

Nobody says it out loud at dinner. They just carry it around in their chest like a low-grade fever.

I felt it again last week.

I was sitting with a friend, sharp guy, runs a real business, employs people, builds things. Halfway through coffee he leaned in and said quietly, “Chris, I do not know what the next five years look like. And I do not know if I am ready for it.”

That is the sentence few are brave enough to say in public.

But almost everyone is thinking it.

The Air Is Different Right Now

Something has shifted.

You can feel it. The pace of change is no longer linear. It is exponential. Things that took ten years to evolve are now evolving in ten months. Industries that felt rock-solid are getting rewritten by tools that did not exist two years ago. Jobs are changing. Kids are growing up inside a world their parents do not fully understand.

For the first time in a long time, a lot of capable people are quietly asking the same question.

“Am I going to be okay?”

That question is not weakness. It is honesty.

And honesty is where God meets people.

The Bible Is Full of People Who Felt This

When God called Abram, He told him to leave his country, his people, and his father's household and go to a land He had not yet shown him. (Genesis 12:1)

Read that again. Go. I will not tell you where yet. Just go.

If you have ever wondered why faith feels uncomfortable, that is why. Faith almost always asks you to move before the picture is clear.

Joshua took over after Moses with no map and an entire nation watching him. God's first words to him were not “here is the plan.” They were “be strong and courageous… do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

He did not say wherever I send you. He said wherever you go.

That is a different kind of promise. It is not a promise that the path will be obvious. It is a promise that the presence will be constant.

Most of us want a map.

God keeps offering a Person.

Fear of the Unknown Is Not the Problem

I want to say this carefully.

The fear itself is not the issue. Fear is information. It tells you that something is at stake. It tells you that you care. It tells you that you sense change coming.

The issue is what we do with it.

Most people do one of three things when they sense the unknown closing in.

They freeze. They keep doing what they have always done, hoping nobody notices that the world has already moved.

They flail. They jump on every new trend, every new tool, every new strategy, terrified they will miss the thing that saves them.

They forfeit. They quietly decide they are too old, too tired, or too late. They check out. They pull back. They stop trying.

None of those are peace. They are all pressure wearing different masks.

The Trailer Taught Me This

When my wife and I were living in that 28-foot travel trailer in a church parking lot, I did not know what was coming next.

I genuinely did not.

Every plan I had laid out on a whiteboard had collapsed. The doors I expected to open were nailed shut. The people I thought were going to walk with us were not there. The runway I thought I had was already gone.

I will tell you what I learned in that trailer, because it is the same thing I am still learning today.

You cannot prepare for the future by predicting it.

You can only prepare for the future by becoming someone steady enough to walk into it.

That is what God was building in the trailer. Not a strategy. A spine.

What's Actually Coming

I will be honest with you.

I think the next few years are going to be more disruptive than most people are emotionally ready for.

Not in a doom-and-gloom way. In a “the rules are changing fast” way.

Some of you are watching it in your industry already. Some of you are watching it in your kids. Some of you are watching it in the technology you can barely keep up with. Some of you feel it in your spirit before you can name it in your circumstances.

Here is the good news.

God is not surprised. He has never been surprised. He was not surprised by the printing press, the internet, or anything that is coming next. The same God who walked Abram out of Ur is fully equipped to walk you into whatever is on the other side of this shift.

But you cannot walk into it on pressure. Pressure breaks at altitude.

You can only walk into it on peace.

The future is not the enemy.

Pressure is.

P.S. — Isaiah 41:10. “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.” Notice God does not say “do not fear because nothing scary is going to happen.” He says “do not fear because I am with you.” The promise is not the absence of disruption. The promise is the presence of God inside it. Carry that into this week.
